Although not unheard of, it is very rare that adults will develop eczema (atopic dermatitis). Statistically only 1 – 3% of adults will be affected by eczema. Eczema will only be present if you have a family history of eczema or if you suffer from other allergies such as asthma. It is very rare to see eczema in patients older than 50.

Eczema and skin allergies in adults are not difficult to diagnose and treat. There are easy protocols to follow when diagnosing eczema.

Firstly there has to be atopy. This means that there should be evidence of allergies in the family or a history of allergies and eczema. It is very seldom that someone will have eczema without a family history of the skin disease.

Next there should be pruritis or itching. Eczema is caused by an itching in the skin that, when scratched, will turn into a rash. This itching should be persistent and result in a rash.

The next symptom that should be present is the eczema itself. This presents itself as a red rash which could also have small blisters or bumps. The blisters and bumps may ooze or flake and over time, the skin may appear thickened or leathery. It is important to remember that it’s not a question of the rash appears and then the itching starts. The rash appears because of you scratching due to the itching.

In adults eczema is commonly found where there are creases in the body – mostly on the backside of the knees and the inside of the elbows. If it occurs on the face, the most likely place it will be found is on the eyelids. In some cases the eczema could be found on only the hands and soles of the feet.

Treatment can be topical with ointment and in extreme cases you may be prescribed with topical steroids or other medication. However, the primary prevention is good skin care and avoiding the triggers for the itching. It is also wise to have allergy testing done to pinpoint allergies that could trigger the eczema.
