Most people will only ever visit their doctor if there is something wrong with them. And while there is nothing wrong with attending the doctor when you have a problem, you should never underestimate the importance of a medical checkup. Preventative care is just as important as medical treatment and that is why so many more people are now choosing to have regular checkups every year. The following are just a few reasons why a medical checkup is so important:

  • Not every serious condition has symptoms when it is in the early stages but if you had a physical examination, these conditions might be picked up. When it comes to conditions such as cancer, it is vital that they are detected as early as possible as this gives a greater chance of success.
  • If you get a physical examination, it may be the case that conditions which are not life threatening in themselves, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, could be treated. The issue with these problems is that they can lead to serious problems such as strokes and heart failure and need to be dealt with to prevent these from happening.
  • You may have a number of small problems that are bothering you but that you don’t want to make a special appointment for and if this is the case, then you can discuss them with your doctor at your checkup appointment. Your doctor may be able to help relieve these problems for you.

With constant airbrushed images in the media, and the pressure on young women to be “perfect”, many women find themselves beginning new fitness regimes at multiple times during a year in an effort to get the body of their dreams; the annual week in the sun can often be a source of panic and worry for women when they consider donning a bikini. Now, there is new form of exercise available aimed at kick-starting your metabolism and promising a guaranteed weight loss; the fitness boot camp. First made popular in America, these army-style exercise classes have now spread around to many other countries and become increasingly popular; many celebs have been spotted attending boot camp classes in an effort to maintain their A-list bodies.

So what do these boot camps consist of? Fitness boot camp classes are usually at least two hours long and focus on very high-intensity cardio and army-style training. A lot of the activities are similar to exercises performed regularly in the army to keep the recruits in tip-top condition. These lessons are performed outside and are usually led by a number of instructors who aim to constantly push your fitness to its limits. Do not let this approach put you off though; the instructors aim to get the very best results for their clients and many attendees report loss of inches within the first week. A course of these boot camp classes can help get you beach ready in no time, as long as you put the maximum amount of effort in.

There are also many boot camps around the country that offers residential courses where you stay on-site for one or two weeks; this is usually only recommended for clients who require a significant amount of weight loss or have a desire to completely overhaul their current lifestyle, and they usually require you to have checked with your doctor that you are a suitable candidate for the course. During these residential courses meals are provided and are aimed at providing all necessary nutrition whilst cutting out all junk food and unnecessary refined sugar.

Female hair loss can be very distressing, but many women don’t realise that it is more common than they may think. Often, hair loss is temporary and can be attributed to outside factors such as diet or increased stress; luckily this can usually be remedied once the underlying problem is identified. Stressful situations can physically impact the body; often appetite and general vivacity is lost and hair becomes brittle and prone to falling out. This type of hair loss will usually stop as the stress subsides and hair will tend to grow back as before. Poor nutrition can cause hair loss in women as the body is being deprived of the nutrients and vitamins it needs to maintain its health and encourage hair growth; again, as with stress, once the situation is resolved the hair will usually grow back.

Unfortunately, sometimes female hair loss cannot be attributed to any factor and is simply a natural thinning of the hair that is similarly experienced by men. Although this type of hair loss is often not reversible, it can often be prevented or stopped by using specially formulated shampoos designed to promote hair growth. These shampoos and treatments do come with mixed results but many consider them to be worth a try as they may provide the desired results. Women suffering from female hair loss are also encouraged to massage their head and scalp regularly; this is because poor circulation can also affect hair growth and regular massaging of the scalp can improve the blood circulation.

It is only in a small number of cases that female hair loss is caused by other more serious problems; alopecia is a condition that causes spots of baldness over a scalp and can affect both men and women. This type of condition can only be diagnosed by a visit to a specialist; an unusual part of this condition is that is can go away over time and hair can grow back; it can also flare up again in later life or go into remission completely.

It’s never too late to take up running as a form of exercise, even if you’ve not run properly since school days! Discover the benefits for women as a form of exercise, not just to physical health but also mental health.

Running is the best calorie-burning form of exercise there is. A 150-pound woman will burn around 100 calories for every mile she runs! It is therefore a great way to lose weight and tone up. In conjunction with a healthy, balanced diet you’ll soon see those excess pounds melt away. Running is a weight-bearing form of exercise and so it improves your strength and, more importantly, your bone density. Post-menopause, all women are at risk of osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) and so it is vitally important to keep your bones strong. Running also improves your cardiovascular strength and boosts your circulation. This means that your risk of heart disease or a stroke will be lowered and your skin will look healthy too. Your overall strength and stamina will improve and this will actually give you more energy and make you less prone to fatigue. You are also less likely to suffer from minor, seasonal complaints such as colds and digestive problems if you keep yourself fit by running.

Running as a form of exercise for women has mental well-being benefits as well as physical health benefits. When you run for exercise, your body releases endorphins and this gives you a “natural high”. As a result, you are likely to feel happier and less stressed or anxious. Running can even help those who suffer from depression to feel better. If you run regularly as a form of exercise, you are likely to sleep better at night, and we all know how great we feel after a good night’s sleep!

Reports are rolling in of the long-term damage almost certainly caused by the currently fashionable sky-high ladies shoes. Obviously fashion is priceless as no one appears to be worrying too much about future bodily damage as sales for these potentially damaging shoes with high stiletto heels continue to soar! According to consultant podiatric surgeon Mike O’Neill, spokesman for the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, “High heels make you raise your heel and as soon as you do that your center of gravity is (unnaturally) pushed forward.”

The problem with most young adults today is that they do not realize the long term harm they are causing to their feet. They blindly follow a hedonistic lifestyle to the detriment of their health. In addition, as these shoes become more popular with newer younger generations, they are being worn for longer hours – worn all day at work, worn all night at nightclubs and worn far too long to stand around and have a chat, and then finally, to dance! No wonder when teenagers are fetched from nightclubs shoes in hand, moaning “My feet are killing me…” No prizes for guessing why they are being dubbed ‘killer heels’.

Research carried out recently suggests that women are starting to suffer from the inevitable problems of hammer toes, bunions and permanent injury to tendons in the legs. Naturally, it is obvious that the higher the heel, the greater the pressure; and the greater the possibility of damage to the back and knees in later life. These problems do not occur at odd times in later life, they all converge on the person at one and the same time! Horror of horrors – remember to keep a wheelchair handy.

How high a price do you actually want to pay for fashion?

Although not unheard of, it is very rare that adults will develop eczema (atopic dermatitis). Statistically only 1 – 3% of adults will be affected by eczema. Eczema will only be present if you have a family history of eczema or if you suffer from other allergies such as asthma. It is very rare to see eczema in patients older than 50.

Eczema and skin allergies in adults are not difficult to diagnose and treat. There are easy protocols to follow when diagnosing eczema.

Firstly there has to be atopy. This means that there should be evidence of allergies in the family or a history of allergies and eczema. It is very seldom that someone will have eczema without a family history of the skin disease.

Next there should be pruritis or itching. Eczema is caused by an itching in the skin that, when scratched, will turn into a rash. This itching should be persistent and result in a rash.

The next symptom that should be present is the eczema itself. This presents itself as a red rash which could also have small blisters or bumps. The blisters and bumps may ooze or flake and over time, the skin may appear thickened or leathery. It is important to remember that it’s not a question of the rash appears and then the itching starts. The rash appears because of you scratching due to the itching.

In adults eczema is commonly found where there are creases in the body – mostly on the backside of the knees and the inside of the elbows. If it occurs on the face, the most likely place it will be found is on the eyelids. In some cases the eczema could be found on only the hands and soles of the feet.

Treatment can be topical with ointment and in extreme cases you may be prescribed with topical steroids or other medication. However, the primary prevention is good skin care and avoiding the triggers for the itching. It is also wise to have allergy testing done to pinpoint allergies that could trigger the eczema.

Most people who are short or near-sighted wear contact lenses. Some of the reasons for not being able to wear them include allergies to the lens materials or to the contact lens cleaning solutions, astigmatism that is too severe to correct or people who suffer from recurring infections. Dry eye conditions also prevent the wearing of contact lenses in some cases; however there are natural tear solutions available that could alleviate this issue.

Anyone with one of the above complications would have to wear spectacles. In this case, they would not be able to play contact sports like rugby, football, baseball or American football! Also some people who wear spectacles can develop little “irritation sores” around their nose when the spectacles rest. Others might not like the feeling of something clinging to one’s nose all day. It could drive one stark raving mad – then it would be advisable to investigate wearing contact lenses!

With contact lenses, the cost factor probably puts a lot of people off, however there is a choice of wearing daily disposable lenses, hard lenses or lenses that have to be removed every night. Some people simply do not want the hassle of digging into their eye twice a day to insert the contacts, but after a while that becomes second nature.

There is not much chance of spectacles damaging the eye or weakening the eyesight. In fact in some cases, they rectify problems with eyesight – as in children who are squint. In addition, nowadays, the spectacle frames from which to choose are so modern and attractive; people could have more than one pair. In addition, if sunglasses are needed, clip on sunshades are available for certain spectacle frames. Alternatively, a pair of prescription sun glasses also functions perfectly.

Both contact lenses and spectacles have pros and cons. It all comes down to personal choice and the kind of lifestyle involved. Some health schemes will help to pay for spectacle or contact lens costs, but opting for the corrective short-sighted operation is classed as “cosmetic surgery” so not too many health packages pay for that.

It is thoroughly unpleasant to start the day after a bad night. The rest of the day moves along at a snail’s pace while you sit and hope that tonight will be different. There are a few tips that you can take on board that will help you to always get a good night’s rest:

  • Be comfortable in bed. Make sure that you have the correct and comfortable mattress for your requirements. There are several on the market that will make your body feel safe and protected, while support is given to the parts (like your lower back) that needs support. The way that you sleep (posture) is also an important factor to consider. The secret is to be as comfortable as possible.
  • Have a routine for bedtime. Perhaps have a nice warm bath to help you relax. Then go straight to bed and tell yourself that the time to sleep has arrived. Try and avoid things that can distract you from sleeping – like cold feet, dripping taps etc. Make sure that these distractions are dealt with as soon as possible before you get into bed. Also make sure that your feet are adequately covered to prevent a chill creeping up your legs. That will definitely distract you from sleeping.
  • If you’ve brought work home, do not do it in bed. Your body needs to associate your bed with sleeping – not working. By working in bed you’re training your body to stay awake in bed.
  • Plan your day in advance. Before you go to bed know that your clothes are ready, your briefcase is packed and everything is ready to go in the morning. That will allow you the luxury of a relaxed morning instead of a stressful one allowing you to sleep peacefully.

Knowing how to choose a personal trainer can help you get the most from your gym time and make it a more enjoyable experience as well. Some people settle for a personal trainer who isn’t a good choice for them and they pay the price. Not only can making the wrong decision mean less enjoyment and power results, but it could even be damaging to your health. Here are some tips for how to choose a personal trainer; hopefully these will help you get most from the experience.

Tips for How to Choose a Personal Fitness Trainer

  • Make sure that any personal trainer you choose has been properly trained. Helping people reach peak fitness is a highly skilled job and doing it wrong could potentially be very dangerous for your health. As well as being qualified as a personal trainer they should also have received recent CPR and other safety training.
  • Trust your intuition. If you meet a personal trainer and they don’t feel right then just walk away. You might not be able to explain why you don’t like this person, but you are obviously picking up something. In order for the expense of a personal trainer to be worth it you need to be dealing with somebody you trust.
  • Another important thing when it comes to how to choose a personal trainer is that you pick somebody with experience. Having all the right qualifications is one thing, but experience means that the trainer can put their learning into practice.
  • Your personal trainer should be willing to listen as well as talk. This is vital because the only way they can help you reach you goals is by listening to you. If you have any medical problems it is doubly important that your trainer is able to listen. It is also a lot more fun to be around people who don’t always try to monopolise the conversation.
  • You want a trainer who seems enthusiastic and positive about your goals. If they only seem to be doing the job on cruise-mode they are probably not the best choice for trainer.
